Bowers Jr. 1/43 to 6/43 then Comdr. R.W. McElrath took command. Casualties - 0. Shore Bombardments - 8. Enemy Aircraft Shot Down - 0 * SEE NOTE BELOW. Surface Craft Sunk - Several small enemy craft at Tarawa, Kwajelein, and Hollandia. Times Under Air Attack - 35. Times Under Shore Battery Attack - 4. Mines Sunk or Detonated - 13. Operations as OTC or Flagship - 2, Com. Screen twice, and Convoy Units. Other Operations Areas - African Convoy, April 1943 and Anti-Submarine Patrol Caribbean March to May 1943. Sea Rescues - 8 Pilots, 4 Aircrew, 3 Other. Longest Period at Sea - 68 Honshu- Hokkaido Strikes 1945. Refueling at Sea - 151 South Pacific Area. Provisions/Ammunitions at Sea - 10 South Pacific Area. * Note: the 501 was attacked one night by 12 Kates off Hollandia in April 1944. The sailors say they shot down from 1 to 3 of the attacking planes. No other ships were in the area thus Schroeder did not get credit for any kills because there was no independent confirmation. Source of this information from Dave Schroeder.
